Bioidentical hormones are chemically identical to the body’s own (estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA) and are given as gel, patch, capsule or injection. Prescription is based on symptoms plus laboratory diagnostics (serum, sometimes saliva or urine).
For women in perimenopause and menopause, hormone replacement therapy – started in good time – is effective against hot flushes, sleep disorders and bone loss; the risk assessment has become more nuanced in recent years. In men, testosterone therapy is established for laboratory-confirmed hypogonadism; as “anti-ageing” with normal values it is not indicated.
Monitoring (blood work every 3 to 12 months, breast and prostate screening) is mandatory.
The initial consultation is usually € 200 to 400, laboratory analyses € 150 to 500. With a medical indication (e.g. menopausal symptoms, proven testosterone deficiency) private insurers partly cover medical services and licensed preparations. Longevity programmes without indication are self-pay.
