Before your first session there is a short conversation, and with physician-led providers often an examination: you will be asked about pressure equalisation, respiratory infections, lungs and medication. You wear comfortable cotton clothing; phone, lighter and electronic devices stay outside.
In the chamber you sit or lie comfortably. As the pressure slowly builds you equalise the pressure in your ears, just like when a plane comes in to land, for example by swallowing or yawning. Then, depending on the chamber, you breathe the enriched oxygen via a mask, hood or directly from the chamber air. Many people read, listen to music or sleep.
A session usually lasts 60 to 90 minutes, after which the pressure is slowly reduced again. You can carry on with your day straight afterwards, including driving.

At normal air pressure almost all oxygen is transported by red blood cells. When the ambient pressure in the chamber rises, additional oxygen dissolves directly in the plasma – a multiple of the normal amount depending on the pressure level. This “free” oxygen can diffuse into tissue that is poorly supplied via the capillaries.
